Description

Within this gothic building, constructed in the 1200s by the Marescotti family, Galgano Saracini collected and exhibited – acccording to the themes of art collection in the 1700s, tapestries, statuettes, bass reliefs, goldwork, porcelain, precious handmade artefacts in ivory, wood and hard stone, Chinese artefacts and a collection of ceramics from the most important Italian schools from 1500 to 1700. An eclectic collection that includes artists from all the great epochs of Italian painting and in particular those from the city of Siena, from the “primitives” of the XIII century to the “purists” of the XIX century. Among the masterpieces present in the collection are works by Sassetta, Sano di Pietro, Botticelli, Sodoma, Beccafumi, Manetti, Vanni, Rosa, Cassioli, Maccari and many other great masters.

Description

The Museo Civico is based in the Palazzo Pubblico, a building constructed between the end of the XIII century and the first half of the XIV to accommodate the “Nine gentlemen that govern the Republic of Siena”. Within the building are the precious frescoes of “La Maesta” (1315), the “Guidoriccio da Fogliano” (1328) by Simone Martini in the sala del Mappamondo, while in the sala dei Nove is situated the cycle of “Buon Governo”(Good Governance), 1339-39 by Ambrogio Lorenzetti, important above all for its ethical and political significance. Also of note is the cycle of Uomini Famosi (1413-1414) by Taddeo di Bartolo (1362 ca.-1422) and the “Episodi di virtù civica” (Episodes of civic virtue), (1529-35) di Domenico Beccafumi

Description

Palazzo Piccolomini, known as the Palazzo delle Papesse, was constructed between 1460 and 1495, designed by Bernardo Rossellino for Caterina Piccolomini, sister of Pio II. It was opened to the public in November 1998 as a centre for art, its principal objective was for the promotion of contemporary art, organizing personal and collective exhibitions, recitals, debates and concerts. Description

Santa Maria della Scala, one of the most ancient hospitals in Europe, has ceased its activities as a fully functioning hospital: during the past few years this institution has been the subject of an important operation of recuperation for use as a museum. This grand complex, situated in the heart of Siena, in front of the Cathedral, conserves the testimony of a thousand years’ history, connecting the present to the Etruscan and Roman origins, through the mediaeval and Renaissance periods. Within the structure is located the ”Pellegrinaio”, decorated with frescoes by the Sienan painters Domenico di Bartolo Vecchietta e Priamo della Quercia, between 1440 and 1444, where the particular historical events of the ancient hospital are richly illustrated.
